Red Threads (2022)
untitled (2022)
My background is primarily in two-dimensional art, and I've spent the past three years working on a painting series exploring themes of Orientalism and the fetishization of East Asian women in the US. The last few of my paintings have been largely inspired by my research of chinoiserie, the European interpretation or imitation of Chinese culture and aesthetic.
Recently, I've been particularly interested in techno-orientalism and the cyberpunk aesthetic, and how these phenomena reflect the West's view of East Asian women. For me, techno-orientalism represents being simultaneously stuck in the future and past, and I hope to take my artistic exploration in a new direction by challenging myself with a new medium, as well as challenging what media fashion gets to decide is ‘fashion’.
